Mercury Rev, a heavyweight in the US indie/psychedelic rock scene, will be coming to Japan for the first time in 10 years!
Formed in Buffalo, New York in 1989, Mercury Rev has built a career on boldly exploring the limits of artistic perception, expressing colors, sounds, and illusions that are beyond our reach. The Guardian praised them as "a rare breed in indie rock - a band that has been evolving their sound for 25 years, incorporating jazz, funk, doo-wop, techno, folk, and more, to expand the very meaning of rock music itself," while Rolling Stone called them "glorious chaos," and the BBC called them "a stunning, mesmerizing stanza of shimmering psychedelic pop, immersive indie rock, and sumptuous instrumentation."
The band's 1991 debut, Yerself Is Steam, was named the "greatest shoegaze album of all time" by Pitchfork, and their 1998 breakthrough, Deserter's Songs, was NME's Album of the Year upon its release, and has since been named to Pitchfork's "Top 100 of the 1990s All Time" (2003), Melody Maker's "100 Greatest Albums of All Time" (2000), Uncut's "200 Greatest Albums of All Time" (2016), and multiple "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die" lists. Through their diverse collaborations with legendary artists, performances at major festivals and on television around the world, Mercury Rev has established themselves as one of America's most innovative groups, balancing mainstream appeal with avant-garde musical experimentation.
