ABOUT SHOW | HIDE

Corey Laury is an all-around performer, producer, and instrumentalist who uses the breadth of his experiences to create intensely personal music. Though he started off behind the switches, Laury is now in front of the microphone, creating in such a way that he's found power in his ability to connect his most personal situations with fans. It's made him an exciting artist to watch because he's an open book in an age of facades and he's slowly changing the industry from the inside out.

Laury first got into music at just eight years old when his mother signed him up to play the piano. After the first thirty-minute lesson, Laury was hooked on music - soon after taking it weekly. Once he got tired of performing other people's music, he decided to start working on his own when he was 12 years old. He found early inspiration in Mannie Fresh and Mystikal who were recorded listening to beats while sitting in a car.

His father bought him FL Studio 9, supporting his dreams, and, soon after, Laury started making beats that same year. He uploaded the beats to YouTube in his spare time. He took a liking to Timbaland's PSP video Beaterator which he used at school to continue his creative expression. He'd start the rough draft there and then take the skeleton of a song home to continue to build upon it.

Around this time, Laury created the Adult Swim Bump Series on YouTube that came from adding concepts, inspired by Toonami and Adult Swim, to the beats that he was creating. Once a week, primarily on Saturdays, he'd upload a beat inspired by the essence of the shows that he used to watch. The series gained some traction and started to convince a growing sect of listeners that he could create some special music.

By the time that he was 16, Laury was convinced of his ability to become successful in this line of work. He started to study his favorite producers, predecessors in the game, instruments, and more, all to put fire to his passion and make his dreamed-about future a reality. He released his first project, Control, in 2014. After graduating in 2015 from Mervo High School in Baltimore, MD, he then went to Frostburg State University to get a Bachelor's degree in music.

While there, Laury started learning about how classical musicians played and took up piano playing in orchestras and ensembles. He enjoyed the experience and learned a lot, even though that particular music style wasn't what he wanted to pursue, so he changed his major to music production. During this time, he released Ink, in 2016.

Everything changed for Laury when he started to fail all of his classes. Eventually, he stopped showing up, feeling that he wasn't physically or mentally fit to be there. He ended up dropping out and coming back home to take some time and figure out who he was and what was going on in his life. During the course of this, he took up a security job at the Radisson Hotel.

In 2017, after conversations with family, friends, and his girlfriend, he started to realize what was impacting him: undiagnosed mental health issues that stemmed from experiences that he repressed. After the issues started becoming unbearable to him and those around him, he found a therapist that helped him to unlock who he was by discussing the trauma and helping him to gain clarity about himself.

As a product of this healing, he released four projects in one calendar year: Vice, Counting Planets, Enhancement, and Nurture Them. He had a brief dip after a panic attack that happened because of his job, but he came back even bigger and brighter and ready to implement what he'd learned and discovered. This led to the release of his long-awaited solo artist debut, Preston & Wolfe, that dropped in August of 2020. Named after the intersection where his therapist's office was located at, it symbolizes the newfound boldness that coincides with his love for music. He also released the instrumentals for the project separately so that listeners could get the full aural experience of his defining body of work.

Laury's music is a true reflection of how he's gotten to this point. As he prepares for his next era, one that puts all of his skills to the test, he wants listeners to realize the extent of who they are by focusing on the internal of artistry versus the external. It's helped him discover who he is and now he wants his listeners to learn who they are too.
