Born in Hartford, Connecticut, USA, jazz vocalist Mike Thornton studied vocals and music education at the prestigious Hartt School of Music.
He taught vocals, performance and jazz technique at the University of Hartford while performing live in his hometown.
He moved to New York in 1984 and formed a big band with Steve Weisberg, who was also from New York, and performed in the NYC area.
He produced a 90-minute radio program for NPR (National Public Radio), "The 1990's Radio Hour. . . and a Half," which was broadcast live in the northeastern United States.
Mike Thornton's jazz quartet performed at New York clubs such as the 55 Club, Arthur's Tavern, Cleopatra's Needle, The Garage, Red Blazer, Augie's, and Torch.
Since 1995, Mike Thornton's jazz collective has performed at venues in the Washington DC area, including Twins Jazz, Bohemian Caverns, State Theatre, Bistro Europa, The Ice House Cafe, The Kennedy Center, Bangkok Blues and Outdoor Concerts.
